This place is kind of like the military but with nepotism: instead of just having to worry about cronyism and having enough time served to advance, you also have to worry if some managers spouse or child is applying for the same job you are - they WILL get it.

First line managers, in my direct experience with three of them, have zero technical skills and typically no managerial skills either, but they love to put the "micro" in "manager".
